The Mandate

The National Commission for Colleges of Education was established by Decree (now Act) 13 of 17th January, 1989 (Amended Act 12 of 1993) as a completion of tripod of excellence in the supervision of higher education in the country.

The establishment of the commission was a resultant effect of the utmost importance accorded to quality teacher education by the Federal Government of Nigeria. Since inception, the Commission has continuously pursued goals of quality assurance in teacher education. NCCE SHUTS DOWN ILLEGAL COLLEGES OF EDUCATION

The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has identified illegal Colleges of Education operating across the country. The Colleges are as follows:

NCCE Commissions the Digitization of the NCE Minimum Standards & Teaching Practice Documents

History was made recently when the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) commissioned the Digitization of the NCE Minimum Standards, Micro-Teaching & Teaching Practice Documents. The complete volume of the documents can be assessed online at www.ncceonline.edu.ng/NCCE-Digitization/Welcome.html.

The Digitization project also involves the production of tens of thousands of the Digitized documents in auto run CD-ROM format. The Commission plans to later distribute the digitized materials CD-ROMs to Colleges and other stakeholders.

Silver Jubilee Celebration and National Conference on Teacher Education

Between 16th and 20th November, 2015, the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) organized a national conference as part of the activities to mark the Silver Jubilee celebration of the Commission. The theme of the conference was "TEACHER EDUCATION REFORMS: GLOBAL AND NIGERIAN EXPERIENCES". The keynote speaker was Prof. Peter Okebukola, OFR and the lead papers were presented by Prof. Peter N. Lassa and Prof. U. M. O. Ivoyi, fnae. At the end of the conference, participants came up with recommendations for sustainable quality teacher education in Nigeria. For details, Click link. Colleges of Education in Nigeria

The National Commission for Colleges of Education has under its control one hundred and fifty two (152) Colleges of Education/NCE awarding institutions, comprising 21 Federal Colleges, 47 State Colleges, 61 Private Colleges, 9 Polytechnics offering NCE and 14 other NCE-awarding institutions. These Colleges are found across the length and breadth of the country and are easily accessible by land and air.

NCCE NEW EXECUTIVE SECRETARY ASSUMES DUTY WITH A PLEDGE TO ENHANCE TEACHER DEVELOPMENT
The newly appointed Executive Secretary for the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), Prof. Bappa-AliyuMuhammadu, has assumed duty. He was appointed on the 1st of August, 2016 by President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR. Prof Bappa-Aliyu Muhammadu born 66 years ago hails from Alkaleri, Bauchi State. He is a Professor of Technology Education and until this appointment he was with Technology Education Faculty of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi, Bauchi State. He had over 20 publications to his credit.

In a handing over ceremony on Thursday 4th August, 2016, the out-gone Executive Secretary, Prof. Monday T. Joshua, welcomed the new Executive Secretary and wished him well in the quest for Quality Teacher Education in Nigeria. Prof. Bappa-Aliyu Muhammadu, thanked his predecessor and wished him well in his future endeavours, adding that, he will improve on the already existing drives towards Quality Teacher Education and appealed for cooperation from the Management and the entire work force to reposition Teacher Education in Nigeria.

He affirmed his readiness to work with the work force he met in addition with his experience of 35years as a teacher to move on the on-going drive for Quality Teacher Education in Nigeria. He reiterated that his administration’s guideline will be the core mandate of NCCE and the integration of the change mantra agenda.The handing over was done in the presence of the Commission’s Management Staff and entourage of out-gone and in-coming Executive Secretaries respectively, of the present Administration.

INAUGURATION OF GOVERNING COUNCILS OF FEDERAL COLLEGES OF EDUCATION

His Excellency, Mr. President Commander in Chief of Armed forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, approved the re–constitution and appointment of Chairmen and Members of the Governing Councils of the Federal Colleges of Education. The Councils were inaugurated by the Honourable Minister of Education, Mal. Adamu Adamu on Thursday 25th May, 2017 at the National Commission for Colleges of Education, Abuja. Retreat for the Chairmen, Members and Principal Officers of all Federal Colleges of Education took place between Thursday, 25th to Friday, 26th May, 2017. Provosts and Principal Officers of the affected Federal Colleges of Education were on ground to receive the Chairmen and Members at the inauguration venue.
